Blog #3 Assessing and Evaluating in Learning Different Environments

You have now applied various types of learning and teaching:
  • Creating learning strategies activities
  • Jigsawing
  • Whiteboarding
  • Evaluating one another
Now that you are really delving into evaluating and assessing activities and one another, consider how you will accommodate peer evaluation in your classroom. How will or did activities like learning strategies, jigsawing, whiteboarding, and even the Leadership Compass open your eyes to how differently we all learn and interact with the concept of learning? How important is it to let students play a role in assessment (whether peer assessing, creating their own learning strategy activities, or even writing their own quizzes)?
Blog by Sunday night, and respond to your compass group classmates by class time on Thursday, Sept. 17th.

  1. In my classroom, I will be sure to accommodate peer evaluation. I think this is important because it is a great way for the students to hear from their own classmates and get feed back on their assignment and to also get suggestions from one another. It was interesting to me to see how we all picked different activities to do and we all had our own way of making these activities. Some people were more on the creative side and others were on more of the educational outlook side of these activities. By this I mean some students worked more on making the project a little more challenging. Like mentioned above, it is very important to let students play a role in assessment whether that is reviewing each others work or even making a quiz for their peers. Making a quiz is a good way to get the students to see what they know about the subject and while making their quiz its just like they are taking a quiz their self. This is helpful because they are still learning even though the quiz might be for a classmate.

    1. I liked how you hit on the idea that we all picked out different activities to do signifying that we do indeed all learn differently. The challenging part I think goes along with the grade level they will be teaching as well. It was easier for me to think of something kindergarteners would do rather than a high school student because hopefully I will be teaching that age. I also think when students make their own quizzes, it helps them review the material as well.

    2. I agree with your point that peer evaluation is a great way for students to get feedback and suggestions from their peers. Students are always getting a teacher's perspective on things, so I think students will respond well by getting feedback from their peers. I also liked how you mention that we all created different activities. This is a great point, because every student learns differently and each student has their own preferences.

    3. I like that you said students need to put their input on their assignments. Why not allow your students to be creative and complete the assignment correctly but with their personality attached.

  2. The different types of learning really opened my eye on how fun it can be for all the students. Using tasks and activities like we did in class are more intriguing for the students and reach more ways of learning. In my classroom, I believe it is important to use peer evaluation because it helps the creator of the lesson see where they did really well and also areas that need improving. Having positive feedback along with negative is very important. It helps the student realizes where in their work was beneficial. While students are grading each others work it also helps by opening their eyes and giving them new ideas and concepts. So overall it can be a beneficial tool for the students to do peer evaluations. I also think that letting students be able to play a role in assessment is good for them because it helps them learn the information very well. The best way to learn something is to teach it, so having the students put into that role helps them to understand the material very well.

    1. I agree with you that positive and negative feedback are both important. If we just had positive no one would strive to make their work or projects better because they would think they are already perfect. I also agree that having students teach the material is the best way for them to learn it.

    2. Peer evaluation is critical in the learning process. Unfortunately for children these days, they do not get much feedback from their peers. Peer evaluation is something severely lacking in today's classrooms

    3. I agree with you that the best way to learn is by teaching, and that positive and negative feedback are both important. I think that by doing this it prepares the student for things they will need to know for the real world such as public speaking, etc.

  3. I will make sure to use some peer evaluation and white boarding in my classroom. The peer evaluation may not happen as much as white boarding because it will be a mathematics classroom but when I can I will fit it in. White boarding is something I am really looking forward to in my classroom. I will have my students get in groups and discuss the math problems presented to them. I think that type of situation will help most of my students learn in a more comfortable way then just struggling on their own. I also like the idea of my students helping make their own assessments. It will hold them more accountable for knowing the material because they were the ones coming up with the questions. I know for me that makes me feel a lot better about quizzes.

    1. I think that using white boards for math problems is really beneficial. I always learned math best that way by having group collaboration. Also I like your point that having the student create quiz questions holds them accountable. This is very true because the students cannot create questions without knowing the information. This is a very good tool to use in the classroom

    2. I agree that it makes me feel better when I know that the questions on a quiz are derived from fellow students. group white boarding is a great way to include struggling students.

    3. I agree with you about the assessment. It his v type of learning will be great in reducing test anxiety which can help the students do better and it holds them accountable at the same time. I also like your idea of waterboarding with math problems I think that will be great in your classroom!

  4. After applying various types of learning and teaching I realize the importance of peer evaluation in the classroom. I think this is an important strategy do incorporate because I feel that students can be very honest with each other. They understand the amount of work it takes to complete the assignment and if someone completed it with the right amount of effort. Although I think it’s imperative, I also think its necessary to keep it confidential. Constructive criticism is significant, but students may be less likely to share their true feelings about a student’s assignment if they know the student will know who graded it. This may make the student feel the need to be nicer so they don’t get upset with them. Learning strategies, jigsawing, white boarding opened my eyes to how differently we all learn and interact with the concept of learning because we all have different ideas of what’s important, so as students do these different assignments, almost all of them will be different, meaning we all learn differently and it’s important to let students express their different thinking and learning skills. The student’s role in assessment is essential. Someone like me who isn’t a very good test taker can still learn things, and learn them better than I would studying for a standard test through applying my own learning style to things like writing our own quizzes or peer assessing. I understand some standard tests are necessary, but letting students play a role in assessing can make them learn even more than they would through a normal test.

    1. I like how you mentioned the students grading other students work and knowing who they are. I had issues with this whenever I would grade a students work because they didn't do the best job but I wanted to give the benefit of the doubt and didn't want them to think that I didn't think that they did a good job. One way to help this situation would be to have an entirely different class grade the papers so that no one knows who had theirs and then that class would have the other glass grade theirs as well.

    2. Like Sydney said, I like how you mentioned students knowing who is grading their paper and how that might not be the best idea. I remember grading math homework in middle school and early high school and we always had to grade someone else's, and I always felt bad if they did bad on it. So I know how it feels and I agree that it would be great to keep it confidential. I also completely agree that letting the students play a role in assessment can be very beneficial, since some students are not good test takers. Giving them options and letting them create their own tests will help them learn more I think.

    3. I like the idea of doing the peer evaluation but keeping it confidential. You as a teacher can learn a lot about your students and see how they view each others good or poor work. Good idea to keep things confidential every now and then.

  5. I will definitely accommodate peer evaluation in my classroom every now and then. As a PE teacher, I'm not sure I will let my students grade each other, because I think a lot can go wrong with that, but there's nothing wrong with letting the students evaluate each other. And with all of the different activities we've learned in class, it's good that there are a variety of different ways I can go about doing this. The only problem I have with peer evaluation is that some students may not feel comfortable doing that or might feel like they will get embarrassed. Insecurity is a big part of kids' lives, especially as they get into middle school, so making them get evaluated or graded by their peers might not be the best idea. I think you just have to know your classes and know your students and gage what would be best. If I can find out a way to keep it anonymous, that would be great. As far as letting them write their own quizzes, I think that's a great idea. Of course I'm going to create what I want, but I think it would be a good way to see what the students already know in a sense and I don't think the students would be as stressed.

    1. I agree with you that in PE, having other students grade each other could go wrong. there are some students that excel in PE and others than may have a hard time and don't want other students seeing their progress or lack of.

    2. I agree with the fact that having peers grade each other in PE would be difficult. They would most likely grade them by skill level, which I don't think is the right thing to do. I think insecurity is a big part of kids' lives at that as as well, but as long as it's anonymous, I think they would be more honest and helpful, and because they are the ones doing the different activities, they will be able to grade accordingly by effort.

    3. I was thinking about how I would apply this to PE as well. Although there could be many problems, there are also chances for them to learn and that's the bottom line.

  6. I've always known that I wasn't the best when it came to how I learned something at school. Now that I've seen all the different strategies of how a teacher can teach I cannot wait to give every student the opportunity to learn. I think letting students being able to decide what works best for them is not only showing that they have confidence but it's preparing them for the future to show them their strengths and weaknesses. Letting students create their own projects, learning activities, quizzes and anything else is a great way to make them feel comfortable in the classroom, feel like they have a voice and most importantly that you, the teacher cares about all different strategies of learning.

    1. I completely agree with you, through this class I have realized that I did not always understand what type of learner I was. If teachers would of used more of these techniques I feel I would have done much better in grade school and high school.

  7. In my classroom, I plan on using these strategies to increase the understanding of the material and promote an environment in which collaboration and student involvement and participation. I have learned many things from these activities that we have exercised in class. These have revealed to me many creative and useful ways to infuse involvement in the classroom. I find that the best way to learn something is to teach it, which is why I found the jigsawing and creating your own quiz activity to be especially helpful when trying to learn large amounts of material.

    1. I agree that these strategies will help increase participation from the class and maybe keep the students more interested in the subject they are learning. I also believe that best way to learn is to teach, it does not have to be to the whole class it can be to one or two people if they want.

  8. As an educator, I plan to incorporate these learning strategies into my classroom in order to promote engagement in the class. A student that participates in peer assessment is more likely to become invested in their own learning experience.

    2. You make a good point that a students will be more likely to become invested in their work when doing peer assessment. Also, how you want to incorporate these learning strategies into your classroom? I agree that they promote engagement in the classroom, but they need to be used in the most appropriate way.

    3. I can agree that the more a student is involved the more invested they become. I think incorporating fun learning strategies in your classroom is a great idea, better than just lecturing. Be creative, have fun, and good luck :)

  9. As a teacher I plan on using these teaching techniques to increase class participation in all courses. I believe the best way for students to learn is to have them teach it to their peers. I feel that students who participate in peer assessment will have a boost in confidence knowing that they had a part in what they are learning.

    3. I think confidence in students is so important. Without it, class participation would decrease and the class environment would become negative.

  10. As a teacher, I think that I will incorporate these methods with my teaching, I like the whiteboard method because it gives the students the opportunity to work together and learn in the way that works best for them as an individual. I think that the peer review in a great method because it gives the students another perspective on the topics in class. One student might understand something in a way that makes it easier for one of his/her classmates to understand. Through peer review they have the opportunity to see that.

    3. I agree with you. I think that when students who participate in the peer review process learn more about how their classmates learn and maybe it will allow them to adapt the way they explain something to that student in the future

  11. Peer review really does help each student see eye to eye and what they can help each other on. Showing different styles of learning skills is a great way to set your classroom.

  12. I think that all of these strategies are good for different people at different times. I believe that the the strategy of peer evaluation, however, can be harmful or helpful, depending on the situation. For some students this is great because it takes some of the pressure off of them believing that their peers won't grade as harshly as their teachers. For other students, such as students who have already high anxiety, or students who have reading disorders may not want their peers evaluating them because for those with high anxiety it could cause them to only be able to focus on the people evaluating them instead of doing their own evaluating assignment, and for the people who are struggling learners it could scare them because they do not want to get judged or made fun of and the students might not understand and work with them like their teacher. As we discussed in the last post i think that students could benefit from all different types of learning strategies, it just depends on how the student learns. i believe that multiple options should be given and the student should have a choice.

    1. Novah, I liked how you pointed out that for some learners the idea of peer evaluation is dreadful for them. It is very true. I also liked how you said that students should have a choice in their learning. The idea of them having a choice is very important because then they will be much more involved on their learning because they can get excited about what they picked instead of just being told what to do.

    2. I think you made some really great points here about how doing peer evaluations could do more harm to some types of students than good. Teachers need to make sure that all students would be comfortable with this type of assessment before implicating it into their classroom. If all students are okay with it then it can be a really great tool to use.

  13. Using these strategies in my classroom would be great because it allows the students to give each other more ideas and thoughts about the project. This can allow for more interaction from students. It can also lead to better performance from students because they will communicate with each other. These strategies as a teacher are also great because you don't have as much work to do.
