Blog #1 We Learn Differently

After watching the UDL video and completing your own Learning Styles Inventories, you now have an idea that we all learn differently. No matter our level of intelligence, we all need material presented, consumed, and applied in different ways, and how smart we are does not always equal how much or how well we learn. How does that make you feel as a future teacher? What will you do to accommodate for that? How does that apply to you as a student here at WC (i.e. does it explain classes you've excelled in and/or fallen short)? Discuss!

Post by class time Tuesday, Sept. 1. Respond to your Compass Groupmates by class time Thursday, Sept. 3rd.

  1. I am still having a lot of trouble with this site. I am going to go ahead and post in here so that I get my response in before the due date but could we possible go over the site tomorrow in class? Several other people are having issues as well.

As a future teacher, I will definitely take into consideration that of course, everyone learns differently. It is important that I take that into consideration and make sure I plan out several different ways to teach a subject. I need to have hands on activities, visual activities and auditory activities. If I have all different ways for my students to learn, then they will be able to pick and choose which will also make them feel like they are somewhat in charge of their learning which will make them more willing to learn the subject. This concept applies to me as a student because I have not always done so well in Mathematics. I would relate that to this discussion because I was never taught the subject in multiple ways and my teachers always used the calculator to help me find the answer instead of showing me multiple ways to learn how to actually solve the problem.

    1. I like how you discussed the different ways that you will engage your students through your lessons. It's important to help them learn through their different learning styles such as hands-on, visual, and auditory activities as you mentioned. I also thought you made a good point when you said "so they feel in charge of their learning", I think this only makes them more excited and confident to learn.

  2. As a future teacher I will use this to recognize that when a child is struggling in my class that maybe I am not teaching in a way that is easy for them to learn. I will take what I am learning from this class and make sure that I give each student, regardless of the way they learn, a chance to succeed in the classroom by providing different ways for all of my students to take in the material, whether it be visual, auditory, or kinesthetic/textile. As a student at Westminster it has opened my eyes to see why I have done better in some classes over others. It also helps see what I can do to learn the material better in a class that does not necessarily teach for my style of learning.

    1. I like that you are using what we are learning about the different learning styles to help yourself in your classes here at Westminster.

    2. I like that you are willing to identify which learning style most benefits your students, which is not always easy.

    3. I like that you want to learn how to indentify in a classroom setting when a student is struggling. I know it's sound like a simple task but I think as a future teacher that is one strategy we are going to need to master.

  3. As a future teacher, I will use what I have learned in this course to work to develop my style of teaching to accommodate all of my students and their different learning styles. I will create my lesson plans to incorporate each style of learning in order to allow each student, regardless of learning style, to succeed in the class. This applies to me as a student here at Westminster by allowing me to see what courses I am succeeding or struggling in, and gives me the tools to work through the struggles.

    1. I feel like we have very similar views on this topic. I like that you are willing to adapt your teaching style to help all types of learners.

    2. I agree with you that accommodating to your students' learning styles is important in regards to being an effective teacher. I like how you talk about molding your lesson plans in order to adjust for this.

    3. I feel very strongly about adapting to everyone's learning styles because I hate when a teacher only sticks to one and one only. I also agree with you that here at Westminster this is allowing me to see what classes I struggle in and how I can use tools to fix them.

  5. As a future teacher, this course will have a big impact on my teaching style, accommodations, and how I will make sure that my students realize that we all learn in different ways. I also feel hopeful that I will be able to accommodate for my students. I remember going through school myself and often feeling frustrated because I didn't understand how the teacher was doing a math problem, or why I couldn't memorize things by looking at the text one time. I had to apply my knowledge by studying and eventually I realized that it was okay. I only hope that I can make my future students feel the same way as well, and find different ways for them to learn and stay focused. As a student at Westminster, I realized that it is okay to learn through peers by utilizing the writing lab, class tutors, and talking to my professors. Through middle school and early high school the stereotype of the someone who goes to a tutor is "dumb" but instead of making students feel dumb at Westminster, it's looked at as utilizing tools, and I think they are all important resources to have.

    1. I agree with you on the fact that we should accommodate to our students needs and make sure that they can lean in the way we are teaching. If they are not understanding where we are coming from, then that's obviously when we need to figure out a new way to teach the same lesson. After working in the schools, I believe some teachers could improve on this some.

    2. Couldn't agree more ladies. Also if our teaching is not reaching them completely we may need to change how we teach to help all the students. Acclimate all the students.

  6. As a future teacher, knowing that everyone learns different actually brings me comfort. I know that those who struggle just need another way in which the material is being presented to them. I will then keep trying to teach them the material in different ways until they understand the concepts. This class has helped give some ideas on different techniques that will benefit all learning styles. Classes here at Westminster do not always provide different teaching styles to benefit all learning types. Some are based on reading and lectures which only very few students will enjoy. Other classes though are good and I can tell that I succeed better in the classes that give a variation of teaching methods.

    1. I really liked how you said you take comfort in knowing that everyone learns differently and that the kids who struggle with your way of teaching just need to be reached by a different method. I really have never thought of it that way but that is very comforting to know that we are all capable of learning it just takes a certain method for a certain person and a different method for someone else.

    2. I too, actually take comfort in knowing people learn differently. The best thing a student can demonstrate to me is the ability to overcome a problem. If I am not reaching them, and they are persistent about wanting to learn, more power to them! I would encourage diversity in the classroom with respects to the amount of different learning styles available to students.

    3. I agree that a lot of classes are just reading and lecture like you said, and only a few students enjoy that. You can tell that only a few students are enjoying it based on their body languages, facial cues, and the other things that they do throughout the classroom. No one really wants to be that teacher. So i agree it is comforting knowing that people learn differently and that you can play around with different learning styles, even multiple learning styles within one lesson and still keep a lot of students attention because you are reaching everyone in one setting and they are interested in what you have to say. Good post.

  7. As a future teacher, I'm going to make sure each and everyone of my students feels comfortable in the environment they are learning in. I know that as a student school wasn't always the easiest thing for me and I want each of my students to know that I care about what they are understanding what they aren't understanding and I will help them in any way I can. I will be the teacher that's not seeking for excellence I will be the teacher that seeks for growth and perservearance. As a student at WC I've learned that not all teachers will or know how to accommodate to students with different learning styles. It's frustrating at times but the only thing you can do is either speak up and explain your case or sit there and fall short. From having a few classes already I have figured out what teachers work well with my learning style and what teachers don't work well with my learning style.

    1. I really like your perspective on how you want education in your class to be. I think that is a great way to look at it. If you continue to use that in the future you will have very successful students. Students will come out of your class achieving more than they ever imagined.

    2. I like how you used a personal experience to influence the kind of teacher you want to strive to be. I also like the part about being a teacher that focuses on growth, instead of excellence.

    3. I like how you are focusing on growth rather than test scores. It is more personal and I think it will allow you to connect with your students on a more intimate and successful level.

  8. As a future teacher, I will work to ensure that each child is exposed to a learning style that benefits them regarding specific content areas. I will also do my best to facilitate understanding through whatever means may be most beneficial. Through becoming more educated on such issues, I feel empowered as a teacher in knowing how to better reach students and promote learning in different ways. After learning more about this topic, I have come to realize my strengths and weaknesses pertaining to different classes and different teaching methods here at Westminster.

    2. I like that you are striving to reach each student individually. It is also nice that through this class you have discovered your learning style and now you are applying it to your classes here at Westminster.

  10. As a future teacher, I am going to change the way I educate to best suit my students. First, I will never assume that a student is of lower intelligence just because they performed poorly on an assessment that was only taught using one type of learning style. The best technique for preventing this problem is to expose all of my students to every learning style and determine which is best suited for each of them. Here at Westminster, I have found a more efficient way to take notes, study, and learn in general, due to my knowledge of my own learning style.

    1. I agree that teachers should never assume that a student is of a lower intelligence just because they performed poorly on an assessment that was taught one way. We have to be able to teach our students in a variety of ways to be able to reach out to all of them so they will all have the opportunity to be successful. I have also found my own way of being efficient here at Westminster because of my own learning style.

    2. I really like that you are willing to change your teaching to benefit your students. That is very important in a teacher because they need to reflect on how their student are performing in the classroom based on how the material is being presented. Once you know how each class learns, then you will be able to get the most potential out of your students.

    3. Hunter, I believe that learning from your own experiences is the best way to be a great teacher! Knowing that everyone is different and has different needs and reaching out to them based on their needs is the easiest way to get them to trust you and let you help them learn. Great idea and teaching skills.

  11. As a future teacher, I am going to use this knowledge of different learning styles to change my teaching so that all of my students have the best opportunity to learn the lesson. For each lesson, I will have to prepare other ways to teach my lessons, which in the long run will make me a better teacher. With my learning style, I am a little bit of all three so at WC for the most part I have been able to figure out what is best for me in all of my classes with my note taking strategies and study habits.

    1. Madison, it is very true that in the beginning the preparation for all the different types of teaching styles is a lot of work but it pays off in the end. Having all that prepped will help when you have a student in your classroom and they don't always understand something. Then you will be able to help them in anyway they need and this will make you a better teacher.

    2. Madison, I think that the idea of creating the same lesson plan in different learning styles is a really effective way to reach all of your students. Unfortunately, finding a way to incorporate all types of learning styles into a 50 minute lesson is going to be tough.

    3. Madison, when you say that you are going to try and incorporate all learning style into your lesson do you mean like one section auditory, one section visual, etc, or do you mean every section has every learning style available? Which way do you think would be more effective? I believe this is a great idea but it is a lot of work and you may not have enough time. I think that trial and error will be your best friend during this project.

  12. For me as a student here at Westminster, I have had troubles with determining the way I should learn that benefits me best. I was always taught one way through school and now with different opportunities I have succeeded in ways I wouldn't have prior to this point in my life. With this, I will take what I have learned and in cooperate it into my teaching styles and allow students to choose their method of studying and learning and allow them to excel at an early age. This will allow them to be extremely comfortable and able to apply more earlier. Less of a lag and more information can be taught.

    1. Even though you stated that you had trouble with determining how you learn best up to this point, I feel like you still learned something. You learned how not to teach, and the importance of using different teaching methods for students with different learning styles. I already feel as though Westminster makes you grow and figure out how to apply yourself in different ways, so it's also good that your future students can now benefit from the things that you will take away from Westminster as well.

    2. I like how you gave your experience here at Westminster and now are going to take it and apply that to when you become a teacher. I have already learned so much about how I want to be as a teacher and I really look forward to learning more.

  13. I believe that this is a very good lesson that should be taught to not only teachers but everyone. I am not in school for teaching but I am getting my degree in child and adolescent psychology and will be working with children. From my experience in the work place and during my internships a lot of students that have been classified as having a behavioral disorder actually have some type of learning disability begin their actions. For example, someone could be sent to me for punching a teacher in the face and labeled as aggressive but really they could be dyslexic and the teacher asked them to read in front of the whole class and instead of getting embarrassed they acted out. I take this into heavy consideration when examining a patient at work and try to find the underline causes and help them through it. Sometimes a simple tutoring session once a week can make the most violent and ill-mannered student the most improved student of the year. :) I have never felt this way at Westminster when being in a classroom setting that is strictly lecture for 2 in a half hours one day a week in one sitting. I learn through a hands on approach so I often times had to go home and teach myself which I felt was the teacher's job. Overall I believe this is a great concept that should be a part of training when dealing with a person in any setting, even the workplace.

    1. Novah, you bring up an excellent point with the example of the student being labeled as aggressive when he really was only acting out because he did not know how to read. When reading I really did not think about any situations like that. I understand where you are coming from when you talk about your Westminster experience as well. I have not taken too many one day a week courses but the ones I have, all have been lecture. It is really hard for me to focus in that setting as well when all the professor is doing is lecturing. So I see where you are coming from.

    2. I enjoyed reading about your experiences because they are so different than everyone else. I have never thought about how behavioral disorders can be actually linked to learning disability but it makes sense. This is because if a student is frustrated with their teacher because of a disability then they can lash out. So this does not alway mean that they have a behavioral disorder. You personal experience was an awesome touch.

    3. Novah, your personal experience is a great way to add real life experience to our classroom knowledge. I hope you can add a real world element and possibly examples for our lessons we are learning in class. As for the lecture course, I think that is the hardest way to learn. Unfortunately, there are many factors tat go into planning a course like that.
